1. How much does it cost to tune my piano?
My charge for tuning your piano is $95. If your piano has not been tuned for a long time, it might require a raise in pitch which is an additional $75 resulting in a charge of $175. This does not include any additional regulation or repairs on the parts of your piano.
If your piano has not been tuned in a long time it may require some repairs and regulation. When I come to your house to tune I can tell you what it will take to fix your piano.
I do free estimates if you decide to have me work on your piano, otherwise I charge a service fee of $45.
Standard pitch is A-440
I carry a full supply of both bass and treble strings. I can replace any string for $30 per string.
When restringing a piano there are two things to consider. First is if the piano is worth it. If the piano is a high quality piano, it would be worth the expense. If the piano has sentimental value then you have to consider whether it is worth the expense. For instance, if the piano is an heirloom and is likely to be passed to other members of the family.
Second to consider is, does it need both treble and bass strings to be replaced or does it just need the bass strings to be replaced. Bass strings become dead from temperature and humidity changes. They also collect dust in the windings. If your bass sections sounds like a dull thud, more than likely the bass section needs to be replaced.
I recommend that the piano be completely restrung, both treble and bass strings as this will give a more beautiful sound to the piano. The tuning pins are typically replaced at the time of restringing.
The cost of a complete restringing on a piano is between $850 - $1000.
If a hammer breaks on your piano, save it. It is best to place it somewhere inside the piano, as it will easily become lost, or you will forget where you put it. Trust me, you don't know how many times I have had this happen in my years as a piano technician.
I can usually repair the broken hammer in your home, but if not I will take the action out and bring it to my workshop and repair it. Before I take the action I will inform you as to the expense of repairing the action.
I carry a supply of old ivories that have been taken off old pianos that have been destroyed. I can usually match the coloring or aging of the ivory.
Yes, it is possible to replace the keytops on your piano. The new keytops will be of plastic, however, new keytops will greatly improve the looks of your old piano.
There are two ways to tighten the tuning pins on your piano.
1. The process of "doping" the pins. This process is to lay the piano on its back and put a solution of Cyanoacrylate around the tuning pins. The piano lays on its back for about 30 minutes, then the piano is set up and tuned. Cyanoacrylate causes the wood to swell around the pins thus tightening them.
2. The pins can be tapped in if the technician is experienced and knows how to do this. I would not recommend tapping the pins in unless your tuner is confident and has the equipment to do it. The piano must be put on its back while the pins are tapped in. On a grand the technician must support the pin block or there is a chance of breaking the cast iron frame. I have successfully tapped the pins in on several pianos over my 40 years of experience.
There is another way to tighten the pins. When the piano is restrung and new pins are installed the technician will replace the pins with a larger diameter pin.
It was commonly thought that a piano should be placed on an inside wall. With modern houses that are insulated properly this should not be a problem. The piano should not be placed near any heat and A/C vents, or anywhere near moving air. The piano should not be placed in a basement unless it has a dehumidifier or has a Piano Lifesaver System installed. If your piano needs a Piano Life Saver System, I am able to install the system you need after looking at the piano.
It usually takes about 2 hours. There are some considerations involving the amount of time to tune a piano. If the piano needs minor repairs, the amount of time will increase.
